He became a printer's apprentice where he worked as a typesetter. He was also contributing articles and humorous sketches to the Hannibal Journal a newspaper owned by his brother, Orion Clemens. He went on to become a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi river.

His humorous short story The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County was published in 1865. It brought him international fame and was translated to French. His unique style weaved with wit and satire in both prose and speech made him popular with critics.

Twain earned a lot of money from his works and lectures although he made poor investment decisions losing most of it. He filed for bankruptcy but later overcame his financial woes with his friend Rogers' help and paid back his creditors.

Mark Twain was married to Olivia Langdon and they had three daughters and a son who died young. Twain was born shortly after a Halley's comet appeared and he correctly predicted that he would go out with it.
