The name castle in itself sounds dreamy and so does the structure look. Castles are medieval. They are fortified structures that were built by nobles or royals in the middle ages. Common for over 900 years, these buildings had some features that set them apart like motte, bailey, keep, curtain wall, gatehouse, moat, battlements, arrow slits, postern, and even a great hall for gatherings.
Castles originated from regions like Europe, Egypt, and China. These places accumulated wealth and resources therefore needing defensive structures. There was also the need to fortify lordly homes from enemies.
However, through the centuries as modernity grew with the introduction of gunpowder, and artillery strong enough to break through stone walls, castles were no longer as safe. Cannon fires made them even more undesirable and they became less popular. Castles were later only constructed as part of the romantic revival of Gothic architecture and not for any military or defense purposes.
Either way, castles remain a fascination to many, what with their airy feel in fairytales and their distinctive appearance. Many people would love to at least visit a castle at some point and some would even want to live in one.
One of the most famous castle in the world is the Windsor Castle in England which is where the British royalty have lived for centuries. And if castles tend to tickle your fancy, we have the perfect quotes to make you even merrier. Read on!
