Sarah Dessen was born on 6 June 1970 in Evanston, Illinois. Her parents were both professors teaching Shakespeare literature and classics at the University of North Carolina.
Sarah was a shy and quiet teen. She went to Greensboro College in North Carolina but dropped out before the end of the first semester. She went back home and enrolled at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
Here, she took creative writing classes and graduated with the highest honors in 1993. She began working as a waitress at the Flying Burrito restaurant I'm Chapel Hill under Lee Smith. Smith gave an agent one of her manuscripts and in 1996, her first book That Summer was published.
She continued working at the restaurant and went to publish Dreamland. Sarah then started teaching at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She became a full-time writer before Just Listen was released in 2006.
In 2009, Along for the Ride was a New York Times Best Seller. She was even called a ‘best-seller machine'. Some of her novels have been part of ALA's ‘Best Fiction for Young Adults'. They include That Summer, Someone Like You, Keeping the Moon, Dreamland, This Lullaby, Just Listen, and Along for the Ride.
In 2017, Dessen was awarded the Margaret A. Edwards Award for her novels Dreamland, Keeping the Moon, Just Listen, The Truth About Forever, Along for the Ride, What Happened to Goodbye, and This Lullaby.
Sarah uses effortless perfection as her writing style. She has spoken up about writing anxiety. To cope, she likes to exercise and read. Some of her books have been adapted to films and purchased by Netflix.
