Richard Duane Warren is an American Southern Baptist pastor and author. He is the founder of Saddleback Church, an evangelical megachurch affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention in Lake Forest, California.
Born on 28 January, 1954, in California, his father was a Baptist minister and his mother was a high school librarian. He founded the first Christian club of Ukiah High School while attending the school before he graduated in 1972.
He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the California Baptist University then earned his Master of Divinity in 1979 from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He went on to get a Doctor of Ministry from Fuller Theological Seminary.
Warren was called to full-time ministry at the age of 19. He began writing books while at the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He got married to his wife Kay Warren in 1975. They have three adult children and four grandchildren.
In 2013, his youngest son, Matthew, took his own life after struggling with mental health for 10 years. This made more than 10,000 people write to him concerning their mental illness struggles in the church. A year later, he launched a ministry to educate the church on helping people struggling with mental health.
He founded Saddleback Church in 1980 and the first service had 200 people in attendance. Over the years, the church averages almost 20,000 people in weekly attendance. His New York Times best selling book, The Purpose Driven Life, was published in 2006 and it sold over 30 million copies.
