Born on 24 August, 1947, in Rio de Janeiro, Paulo Coelho went to a Jesuit school. At the age of 17, he was taken to a mental hospital by his parents because he rebelled against his Roman Catholic upbringing.
However, Paulo ran away three times. He was later released at the age of 20. His parents enrolled him to law school but he later dropped out to become a hippie. He travelled through South America, Mexico, Europe, and North Africa.
He was using drugs in the 1960s and when he returned to Brazil he became a songwriter. He also worked as an actor, journalist, and theater director before settling for writing. Paulo married artist Christina Oiticica in 1980.
Paulo published his first book, Hell Archives, in 1982. It didn't make much of an impact and he went on to write The Pilgrimage in 1987. The novel is a recollection of his experiences on his path to self discovery.
The following year, in 1988, Paulo published The Alchemist with a small Brazilian publishing house. It didn't do so well so he took it to a bigger publishing house. The novel did well and even became a best seller.
Paulo went on to work on other books and he has sold over 320 million copies altogether. Here is a wonderful collection of Paulo Coelho quotes, Paulo Coelho sayings, and Paulo Coelho captions that will inspire you.
