T. D Jakes, born Thomas Jakes Sr on 9 June 1957, is an American bishop, author, and filmamaker. He is the founder and senior pastor of The Potter's House which is a non-denominational American megachurch. His sermons and church services are broadcast on The Potter's Touch.
Being the youngest of 3 children, Jakes was often called ‘the Bible boy.' That was because as a child, he used to preach to imaginary congregations and always carried his Bible to school. However, he had a slight lisp which made people tell him that he could never preach.
Jakes was officially ordained in 1979. He met his wife Serita Ann Jamison when he went to guest preach at her neighborhood church. They got married in 1982 and they have 5 children together and several grandchildren.
Jakes formed the Temple of Faith Church in Montgomery. It was a storefront church with only 10 members. He had to work at the Union Carbide to support his ministry. He continued to grow and in 1996, he moved to Dallas to establish the Potter's House.
His first service attracted an audience of more than 2,000 people. Membership has continued to grow to over 30,000 people. In 2,000, Jakes was one of PBS Religion and Ethics News Weekly's “Top 10 Religious Leaders". In 2001, Time Magazine and CNN named Jakes “America's Best Preacher".
In 2002, Savoy Magazine named him one of the “Top 100 Powers That Be." He was also invited by Barack Obama to his historic presidential inauguration in 2009. Apart from being a world reknowned evangelist, Jakes has written over 20 books and won a gospel music Grammy award.
