The disorder caused him to lack arms and legs. His parents were initially taken aback by his appearance, but accepted him and lovingly raised him. They instilled independence in him from a young age.

Nick would even have to do house chores to earn his allowance. His disability however did affect him growing up. He was bullied at school and even attempted suicide at age ten by trying to drown himself in the bathtub.
