Nicholas Charles , is a celebrated American novelist, screenwriter, and philanthropist. Born on 31st December, 1965, in Omaha Nebraska, he was the middle child of three children.
The family moved a lot while he was growing up as his father pursued graduate studies. Sparks graduated in 1984 as the valedictorian of Bella Vista High School. He got a scholarship at the University of Notre Dame where he majored in business finance.
Sparks mother inspired him to write when she saw that he was bored. He read a lot, but had never considered writing until his mother asked him to write a book to avoid boredom. He wrote his first novel, The Passing, in 1985 but never published it.
In 1989, he went on to write The Royal Murders, which he, too, never published. After college, he looked for jobs with publishers and applied for law school but was unfortunately rejected in the two. He went on to spent the next 3 years doing varying jobs.
In 1990, he co-wrote Wokini: A Lakota Journey to Happiness and Self-Understanding with Billy Mills. The book sold 50,000 copies in its first year. In 1994, he wrote The Notebook in his spare time. The novel went on to become a New York Times best-seller in its first week of release and was there for 56 weeks.
Apart from The Notebook, all of Sparks novels have been New York Times and international best-sellers. Eleven of his novels have been adapted to films from The Notebook to The Choice.
Sparks met his wife Cathy Cote while on spring break in 1988 and they got married the following year. They have three sons and twin daughters. However, the couple later divorced. Sparks is very philanthropic and has severally donated to various causes.
