Born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu on 26 August 1910, Mother Teresa heard her calling when she was only 12 years old. When she turned 18, she joined the Sisters of Loreto at Loreto Abbey in Ireland.
Here, she learned English because she intended to become a missionary. She went to India in 1929 and taught at St Teresa's School. She took her first religious vows in 1931 and her solemn vows in 1937.
She was a teacher for 20 years at the Loreto Convent school even becoming the headmistress in 1944. However, she was deeply disturbed by the extend of poverty that surrounded her.
People lived in misery and there was sickness everywhere. In 1946, while on a train heading to Darjeeling, she felt drawn to serve the poor for Jesus. She got permission to leave the school and began her missionary work to help the poorest of the poor in 1948.
Her first year was challenging and she was tempted to go back to the comforts of her convent. However, she persevered and received permission from the Vatican to start the Missionaries of Charity in 1950.
Most of her work was centered on caring for the hungry, homeless, naked, crippled, blind, lepers, and people who felt unloved, unwanted, and uncared for by society. Mother Teresa received a lot of support and donations worldwide.
Apart from other honors, she received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. Here is a beautiful collection of the most iconic Mother Teresa quotes, Mother Teresa captions, and Mother Teresa sayings! Read on.
