Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was born on 24, September 1896. He was an American novelist, essayist, and short story writer. He is regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century.
He was born in a middle class family in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Even as a young boy, his friends described him as extraordinarily intelligent with a strong interest in literature. His first fiction piece was published in the school newspaper when he was 13.
His parents took him to Newman School, a Catholic prep school in New Jersey. While here Father Sigourney Fay saw his literary potential and encouraged him to become a writer. After graduation, he joined Princeton University.
In a bid to become a successful writer, he wrote stories and poems for the Princeton Triangle Club, the Princeton Tiger, and the Nassau Lit. At age 18, he met Chicago socialite Ginevra King and they got into a relationship.
Ginevra became the literary model for his characters Isabelle Borgé in This Side of Paradise, Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby, etc. However, their relationship later ended because Ginevra was of a higher class than him.
He later rebounded with Zelda Sayre, who was also from an affluent family. They stayed together and even got engaged, Zelda later broke off the engagement. Scott had moved to New York but was not able to support her. His writing kept being rejected.
Dejected, constantly suicidal, and having given up hope, he returned home feeling like a failure. He decided to give writing one last try. His novel The Romantic Egotist had been rejected until further revisions.
He revised it to This Side of Paradise and it became an instant success making him a household name. He went on to write four story collections, 164 short stories, and 3 more novels, The Beautiful and Damned, The Great Gatsby, and Tender Is the Night.
